The Double Ninth Festival—Chinese Traditional Festival ------By Lynn From Predatex Silk

The Double Ninth Festival, observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, is a traditional Chinese holiday, mentioned in writing since before the East Han period (before AD 25).

According to the I Ching, nine is a yang number; the ninth day of the ninth lunar month (or double nine) has too much yang (a traditional Chinese spiritual concept) and is thus a potentially dangerous date. Hence, the day is also called "Double Yang Festival" . To protect against danger, it is customary to climb a high mountain, drink chrysanthemum liquor, and wear the zhuyu plant, Cornus officinalis. (Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are considered to have cleansing qualities and are used on other occasions to air out houses and cure illnesses.)

Once there was a man named Huan Jing, who believed that a monster would bring pestilence. He told his countrymen to hide on a hill while he went to defeat the monster. Later, people celebrated Huan Jing's defeat of the monster on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.[citation needed]

Double Ninth may have originated as a day to drive away danger, but like the Chinese New Year, over time it became a day of celebration. In contemporary times it is an occasion for hiking and chrysanthemum appreciation. Stores sell rice cakes (糕 "gāo", a homophone for height 高) with mini colorful flags to represent zhuyu. Most people drink chrysanthemum tea, while a few traditionalists drink homemade chrysanthemum wine. Children learn poems about chrysanthemums, and many localities host chrysanthemum exhibits. Mountain climbing races are also popular; winners get to wear a wreath made of zhuyu.

There is an oft-quoted[citation needed] poem about the holiday, Double Ninth, Remembering my Shandong Brothers (九月九日憶山東兄弟), by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei:

独在异乡为异客,每逢佳节倍思亲。

遥知兄弟登高处,遍插茱萸少一人。

As a lonely stranger in a foreign land,

At every holiday my homesickness increases.

Far away, I know my brothers have reached the peak;

They are wearing the zhuyu, but one is not present.

About Mid-Autumn Festival by Lynn from Predatex Silk Co.,Ltd.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival celebrated by ethnic Chinese people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night, corresponding to late September to early October of the Gregorian calendar with full moon at night.

Mainland China listed the festival as an "intangible cultural heritage" in 2006 and a public holiday in 2008.It is also a public holiday in Taiwan and in Hong Kong.

Due to China's influence, Mid-Autumn Festival is also celebrated in other parts of Asia. Mooncakes have also appeared in western countries as a form of delicacy.
The festival celebrates three fundamental concepts which are closely tied to one another:
Gathering, such as family and friends coming together, or harvesting crops for the festival. It's said the moon is the brightest and roundest on this day which means family reunion. And this is the main reason why people think mid-autumn is important.

Thanksgiving, to give thanks for the harvest, or for harmonious unions
Praying (asking for conceptual or material satisfaction), such as for babies, a spouse, beauty, longevity, or for a good future.

Traditions and myths surrounding the festival are formed around these three concepts, although traditions have changed over time due to changes in technology, science, economy, culture, and religion. It's about well being together.

Herewith we introduce you a very famous Chinese antient poem written 1000years ago but talented poet Sushi!

Thinking of you

Mid-autumn of the Bing Chen year
Having been drinking happily over night
I'm drunk
So I write this poem
Remembering my brother, Zi You

When will the moon be clear and bright?
With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the clear sky.
In the heavens on this night,
I wonder what season it would be?
I'd like to ride the wind to fly home.
Yet I fear the crystal and jade mansions
are much too high and cold for me.
Dancing with my moonlit shadow,
It does not seem like the human world.

The moon rounds the red mansion,
Stoops to silk-pad doors,
Shines upon the sleepless,
Bearing no grudge,
Why does the moon tend to be full when people are apart?
People experience sorrow, joy, separation and reunion,
The moon may be dim or bright, round or crescent shaped,
This imperfection has been going on since the beginning of time.
May we all be blessed with longevity,
Though thousands of miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together.

Silk Fabric -- Silk Dupion(Dupioni)

Silk and Silk Fabrics Suitable for Wedding Dresses

Of all the choices surrounding your dream wedding dress, the most important factor to consider is material. The fabric of your gown determines its volume, structure, and texture, and should complement your skin tone and body type.

Despite the variety of fabrications available to modern brides, few are as simple yet luxurious as silk fabric and silk alternatives. You’re likely the romantic and glamorous type if you’re looking for a silk wedding dress, so keep scrolling for our breakdown of this fabric’s qualities and care, as well as gorgeous alternatives and unique styles.

What Is Silk?
Natural silk is a soft, glossy fabric that has been around for over 6,000 years. Originating in China and kept secret for over two thousand years, this luxurious fabric has traditionally been reserved for wealthy dynasties and aristocratic families. Production of natural silk fabric is a time-consuming process that requires meticulous attention to detail. However, in more recent times, synthetic and blended fabrications have become widely available.

Some Wedding Dress Designer claims silk fabrics are too expensive so they use fake silk(polyesters) instead…  But, is that ture!!??
A wedding dress made from 100% natural silk fabric could both rare and no cheap. But the prices will definitely be worthy as silks would never be simply replace by polyesters or silk blends! Those who claims the polyesters or silk blends being as good would only turn out to be a joke and fraud!

When shopping for a wedding dress, you will likely come across “silk” gowns that are actually polyester satin or charmeuse. These are cheap version and the handfeel/shine is totallt different from silk!!

Our silk satin 19mm(82gsm  mediate weight) is only about USD14/mtr and wedding gowns would cost thousands of dollars. Yet some wedding dress claims silk satin is too expensive to afford to make your dress and use polyester instead. Just because the polyester satin cost USD1.2/M in average!! Sometimes, as a silk fabric manufacturer,
we cannot figure out the reason...  Why not just give our bides the best??

How Do I Care for These Shimmering Silk Fabrics?
Silk satin, and silk faille(crepe de chine) wedding dresses can be spot-cleaned with mild liquid detergent, warm water, and a soft, clean cloth. Some places you could buy silk-suitable soap or cleaser.Just remember to test a soap or cleanser on a hidden area of your silk dress first. For an allover clean, take your silk dress to a professional dry cleaner nearby your resident.

Wedding dresses made with silk satin, or silk faille(crepe de chine) can be ironed on a low setting; just be sure to place a protective cloth between the heated surface and the fabric. You can also de-wrinkle your gown with a steamer appliance, or by hanging the gown in a safe area of your bathroom and allowing steam to build up from a hot shower.

Over time, these expensive fabrications are prone to attack from moths and mildew. Store your silk, satin, or silk faille(crepe de chine) wedding dress in a cotton pillowcase away from artificial and natural light. For top-notch protection, take your gown to a professional gown preservationist.

Some wedding brands to recommend!
Yet some wedding brands do use 100%real silk fabrics for their wedding gowns!  If you are not so sure about that. We can recommend some of our customers and their silks are all supplied by us thus we are sure they are using 100%real silk for there gowns! Contact or consult us any time you want! What is the best silk for a high quality wedding gown? ----by Lynn from Predatex Silk.

Among all the usage of silk fabrics, making high-end wedding gowns has always possessed an important role!!  The most regularly used silks are SatinCharmeuse, Duchess Satin, Dupioni, Faille(Crepe de chine), Chiffon, Taffeta, Organza, Georgette and etc.

Satin Charmeuse is boneless, soft and shiny. Some use media weight satin charmeuse in about 19-22mm, other higher end uses 30mm satin or even 40mm satin!! 40mm has been the heaviest ever in silk satin and of course most expensive& luxurious!! Predatex Silk produce these items regularly and you buy from us in wholesales prices.

Duchess Satin is also very welcomed to make wedding gowns due to its marvelous handfeel and unique drape! Normally 26.5mm is widely used.

Silk Crepe de chine, some places was called silk faille, is widely used in bridal dresses. One reason is that its shine is not that dazzling as satins but more calm and comfortable. Another reason is that it does not easily get creased as the other silks due to its high twisted yarn used. So it is much more durable than the other silks. Some customers would like to have 40mm heavy crepe de chine and some even want the 40mm crepe de chine with elastic!! No problem! You can get all these from www.predatextile.com !!

Of course, many other silks are used by wedding brands such as dupion, chiffon, organza…
We shall try to explain them better next time!

For more information on silks or trying to get our silk swatches, please do not hesitate to contact us via email.: lynn@predatextile.com

The Origin of Dragon Boat Festival--China ----Poet Quyuan and the Dragon Boat Festival (edited and illustrated by Lynn fm Predatex Silk)

The Dragon Boat Festival (aka Duanwu Festival) is believed to be originated in ancient China. There are a number of theories about its origins. There are also a number folk traditions, beliefs and explanatory myths connected to the observance. Today, the best, most widely accepted version is that the Duanwu festival originated in memory of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan (340-278 BC) who lived in the Chu State during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC).

Quyuan---one of the greated poet in China who loved his country deeply!

The best-known traditional story holds that the festival commemorates the death by suicide of poet Qu Yuan, a Confucius scholar and minister of the ancient Chu state during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan, a descendant of the Chu royal family, served in high offices in his state. He wrote influential Chinese literary works like "Li Sao", including poetry. He is commonly referred to as a a great patriotic "poet" and a "statesperson". works in literature. However, he is more properly considered as a ministerial Confucius scholar.

Duanwu Festival ChinaQu Yuan always put forward policies and encouraged the king of Chu to make his state stronger independently. Qu Yuan' measures were carried out and his state become thriving and strong. Unfortunately, the good time did't last long. He was entrapped by evil speech and dismissed by the king because of his action against alliance between Chu state and Qin State. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of famous literary works to express deep worry about his state. Qu Yuan's worry was proved to be right. Twenty-eight years later, Qin conquered the Chu capital. In despair at not being able to halt the decline the state, he drowned himself in the Miluo Rover on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

Heard Qu Yuan's suicide, the local people who admired his patriotic action rowed their boats out onto the river to search for his corpse. At the same time, some people threw food into the water to prevent Qu Yuan's corpse from being eaten by prawns, fish and crabs.

Despite the modern popularity of the Qu Yuan origin theory, in the former territory of the state of Wu the festival commemorated Wu Zixu (526 BC - 484 BC). Like Qu Yuan, Wu Zixu was a loyal advisor whose advice was ignored by the king to the detriment of the kingdom. Wu Zixu was forced to commit suicide by the king Fuchai, with his body thrown into the river on the fifth day of the fifth month. After his death, Wu Zixu was revered as a river god. The local people used the ways (similar to that people used for Qu Yuan) as sacrifice ritual to worship the river god. In places such as Suzhou, in Jiangsu province, Wu Zixu is remembered during the Dragon Boat Festival to this day.

It is said the the food the people threw into the river water is the origin of Zongzi (Chinese rice dumplings). It is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing that the local people were paddling out on boats onto the the local river. that is what the Chu people used their ways to offer mourning to Quyuan after his death. The date and the ways were developed into a custom, troditiona and festival now.

                          Yammy!! Zonzi!!!

Modern researchers have theorized that the commemoration of Qu Yuan or Wu Zixu were superimposed onto an existing holiday tradition, but has subsequently overtaken the original significance. More people agree that traditional rituals of the Duanwu Festival represent offerings to the Gods and worship of dragon king and mostly relate to avoiding diseases and luck blessings in Chinese culture.

Why there are more and more people love digital printing silks? ---By Lynn at Predatex Silk

It is more and more a trend that people love digital printing silk fashion, wedding gown or evening wear! Why? We’d like to list the following reason that we could think of.
1. Traditionally, the prints on the fabrics are via traditional screen or rotary screen printing methord, which means there are maximun colors of 10 due to limitation of fecility! Thus there is a great limitation on the designs to put on fabrics. However digital prints break through that limits! Digital prints is like print on a A4 paper. You are able to print any designs or photos on fabrics! What you see on the computer is what could be printed on the silk fabrics!

2. However, digital prints is no cheap at the moment comparing to the traditional printing methord. Some brands use polyester background fabric for the digital prints. Here is a problem! Normally 1mtr of polyester chiffon/cdc fabric would be about USD1.00! (Of course it is the price in China. When many middleman bring them to Europe or America, price doubles or triples…)  However the cost for digital prints would be at least USD5.00!!  Is it like you are “killing a mouse use a gun”?  Then which fabric is to match digital prints then?

3. Without any doubt, silk fabric is the best to match digital prints! When the digital prints encountered with the luxury of silk fabrics, you could already imagine how they are matching each other!

4. Every article comes to the last topic. Where to buy or how to buy digital printing silk fabrics? We strongly suggest Predatex Silk Co.,Ltd----a Chinese exporter for only 100% silk fabrics. Poem Qingming by Du Mu, an ancient Chinese Poet---by Jasom from Predatex Silk CO.,LTD. on 31st MAR.2017

Poem Qingming by Du Mu, an ancient Chinese Poet
---by Jasom from Predatex Silk CO.,LTD. on 31st MAR.2017
It is Qingming Festival time of the year again! It is a time for family gathering and sweeping tombs of past family members.
As it has been a so ancient festival that I have no idea how it comes in to being or why, but I guess people in the ancient time put up this festival at the very Spring time of year to pray for a harvest year when they are about to seed.
As long as people talk about Qingming Festival, a poem comes out from every Chinese mouth, elder or kids…

      清明 ---杜牧

    清明時節雨紛紛,
    路上行人欲斷魂。
    借問酒家何處有?
    牧童遙指杏花村。
I am trying to translate it by myself, yet I know I am not qualified to manage that! However, I checked over on the internet and found many versions of translation, below seems to be the best in my view,

Qing Ming by Du Mu
It drizzles endless during the rainy season in spring,
Travelers along the road look gloomy and miserable.
When I ask a little shepherd boy where I can find a tavern,
It points at a distant hamlet nestling amidst apricot blossoms.

If you would like to discuss with us more about Qing Ming Festival or anything related to Chinese ancient culture, please contact Jasom via jasom@predatextile.com
We are selling no more than just silks with a competitive price, we also sell Chinese culture to the rest of world free of charge!

Mulberry silk fabric or Tussah silk fabric?! Which is better? ----By Lynn from Predatex Silk Co., Ltd

1.    Difference from their silk worms!

Mulberry silk fabrics are made of mulberry silk which is cocooned by mulberry silk worms who feed on mulberry leaves while tussah silk fabrics are made of mulberry silk which is cocooned by tussah silk worms who feed on tussah leaves.  And they are no the same kind of silk worms at all! Nowadays mulberry silk worms are raised by people and tussah silk worms are wild worms.

2.     Difference from their appearance, handfeel, usage and price!
Mulberry silk fabric is in delicate white, supple and flexible with fine and symmetry fiber.
While tussah silk fabric is relatively stiff in handfeel and the thickness is uneven with more knots. The color for tussah fabric is not as white as mulberry, but some kind of gray and blue!
In general, the application of mulberry silk fabric is more extensive. It is the first choice for gowns and fashion with items such as silk satin charmeuse, silk georgette, silk crepe de chine, silk habutai, silk chiffon and so on. And tussah silk is mainly used for quilt or silk blanket, sometimes coats.
Pricewise, because the mulberry silkworms need artificial farming with much greater demand, so the price is higher than the tussah silk fabrics in general.

3.    Which is better indeed? Mulberry silk or Tussah silk!
Personally I think mulberry silk fabric is better as they have been well recognized by people for thousands of years for its luxurious characteristics. Even through tussah silk fabrics are recently used by some designers for fashion uses due to its “raw”and “wild” characteristics, they are still not widely used or accepted! Of course, Predatex Silk is specialized for mulberry silk fabric for many years and we might have some “biases”on this issue! Then what do you think about this issue or would you like to know more? Fine, contact Predatex Silk through website: www.predatextile.com or send us emails directly with our sales director Jasom via jasom@predatextile.com
